After 40 Years, It’s Finally “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day”

There are a lot of baby boomers who remember clearly the Vietnam War era of the 1960s and early 70s, and who had a lot of friends and family who fought in that conflict that separated this nation. Immediately following the war, there were no parades for the military returning home and veterans were shunned by those opposing the fighting. Their allegiance to this country through their military service was never really honored properly in those early years.

Since that time, many consciences came alive, realizing this faction of fighting soldiers were indeed Americans, who upheld their obligation to their country. If you ever get a chance to travel to Washington D.C., you MUST see the Vietnam Memorial Wall–one of the most moving tribute walls to men and women who shaped our history. In Lubbock there is a world-renowned Vietnam Center at Texas Tech University.

FINALLY, forty years after the war ended, the U.S. Senate has declared March 30 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” with VFWs celebrating nationwide. Hoping those veterans will never be forgotten, the Lubbock VFW Post 2466 is honoring them Friday night with a special tribute dinner and dance. It’s from 7 p.m. until 1 a.m., one block East of 114th and I-27. For reservations and information go to their website or call 806-319-2522.
