Since March 1, 1972 events have happened  to "accord the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals".  Ellen Stanley, a teacher in Lubbock and her sister Mary Lynne Rave of Beaufort, North Carolina came up with the idea to includes events at zoos, schools, nursing homes, etc.

This day brings to mind famous pigs.....Arnold, from the TV show of the 60s "Green Acres".  Remember how smart he was?   Or how about Miss Piggy?  Or, my personal  favorite, who, after seeing the movie "Babe", I decided to become a semi-vegetarian (eating nothing with eyes except potatoes).  Scienceray.com lists the top 15 smartest animals:   sheep(15),  pigeon (14), rat (13), octopus (12), squirrel (11),  pig(10), cat (9), dog(8), parrot (7), crow (6), elephant (5), monkey(4), whale(3), dolphin (2) and great ape (1).  So, to celebrate their importance on their national day, you could have a Pig Party, complete with Pink Pig Punch, Pork Skins and Bacon Bit Dip...or humbly consider  honoring  the porcine with a porkfree affair.   Th-th-that's all folks!
