The Dixie Chicks: Are You Over it Yet?

I get it. The Dixie Chicks made a superficial comment about the President of the United States publicly… in 2003. Are you over it yet?

If I’m correct, the saying goes… “Don’t point your finger unless your hands are clean,” or if you would like to get biblical, “Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye” (Matthew 7:3).  We’ve all said something considerably stupid, and I know each of you have said something distasteful about a President you didn’t agree with. Luckily for you, it was not broadcasted across the world.

However, the Dixie Chicks made history and taught us an even greater lesson after this ordeal. Track with me here…

The trio was at the peak of their career when sh** hit the fan. They were, and still are, the top-selling female group and top-selling country group. But when word spread like wildfire about what was said, they were blacklisted from Country Radio — and still are at many stations today – 10 years later.

You can see how this would be a hindrance, as radio is the No. 1 outlet for getting music to the people’s ears. So how do you sell albums when radio refuses to play your music? Well, the Dixie Chicks moved forward without them. They made it to No. 1 on the pop and country charts, and had a gold record in the first week of their album release.

They successfully redefined their career without relying on radio. If you haven’t realized it yet, this is a big freaking deal.

I think this should come as a lesson to us all that when the world gets us down and crucifies us, you just have to move forward. There is always a way to pull through. And the Dixie Chicks have provided you with a superb example.

Now to get off my soapbox… I owe my career in Country radio to the Dixie Chicks. Their music introduced me to the Country genre back in the ’90s, and I haven’t looked back since. Yet, I have not seen them live. This is an issue for me – and I hope it’s an issue for some of you too.

They recently launched their Long Time Gone Tour… in Canada?? C’mon. I seriously think we can do better than that.

Forgiveness is never too far gone, and I think it’s about time these ladies were welcomed back to what they have dedicated their lives to.
