A Texas Tech University student, senior geophysics major from Austin, Jeffrey Poole, is a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army; and he is coordinating a special event throughout the month of April for the Texas Tech Veterans Association. It's "Cell Phones for Soldiers", a non-profit campaign collecting old, used and even broken phones which are sold to refurbishing companies. The proceeds received from these companies are then used to purchase phone cards for the deployed military.

Sgt. Poole, who served two tours in Iraq, tells Texas Tech News that the campaign is important because it helps connect soldiers, marines and airmen with their families. Dates and times for phone collection are:

Tues., Apr. 3, 7 p.m., Allen Theater
Thurs., Apr. 5, 10 a.m., Student Union Building, west Plaza
Wed., Apr. 11, 11 a.m., Student Union Building, west basement
