Rick’s Retro Rack With Johnny Paycheck [VIDEO]

On the retro rack today is a singer who took his name from a professional boxer. Johnny Paycheck was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and had huge success in the 70's. But he battle with drugs, alcohol and legal problems most of his life.

Paycheck worked for some of country music's top bands including Porter Wagoner, Ray Price, Faron Young and George Jones. He was also writing songs and in 1966. Tammy Wynette had a hit song with her recording of Paycheck's song "Apartment #9.

After having some money problems and living on the streets of Los Angeles, Nashville producer Billy Sherrill tracked Paycheck down and signed him to a contract with Epic Records.

In 1971 Paycheck would be back on the charts with a song called "Don't Take Her She's All I Got." It reached #2 and received a Grammy nomination.

Paycheck's life though continue to be a mess. He shot and wounded a person in a barroom fight and was sentenced to two years in prison. He got out in 1991.

Paycheck became a member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1997 and he died in February 2003.
