He is known as "the storyteller". A great songwriter, having recorded several Number One songs and other artists recording and having major hits with his songs.

Tom T. Hall had a great way of singing a song and telling a story all at the same time. While other artist were having hits with the songs he had written, he decided to become a performer.

His first songs didn't do much, but in 1968 Jeannie C. Riley had a huge hit with his song "Harper Valley PTA". It stayed at Number One for three weeks.

That song brought attention to Hall's recording career and he had his first Top Ten hit with "Ballad of Forty Dollars".

In the 70's he was consistently on the charts, having scored five Number One hits from 1971 through 1976.

In the mid 90's, Hall had been retired by then, Alan Jackson recorded Hall's song "Little Bitty". It went straight to Number One.

But on this day, January 26, 1973, Hall's song ("Old Dogs- Children And) Watermelon Wine" was at Number One.

Check this out as he tells the story on how the song came about.
