NCAA Tournament 2013 West Region — Day 2

The second day of the NCAA Tournament should was a fun one in the West Region, with four games on tap.

Ole Miss, led by cocky sharpshooter Marshall Henderson, took down a Wisconsin team that had trouble putting the ball in the net. LaSalle upset fourth-seeded Kansas State, while a hot Ohio State team made quick work of Iona. Notre Dame and Iowa State rounded out the region’s festivities in a #7-#10 showdown.

(10) Iowa State 76, (7) Notre Dame 58

Freshman Georges Niang scored 19 points, and Iowa State routed Notre Dame, 76-58, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament’s West Region on Friday evening in Dayton, Ohio. The 10th-seeded Cyclones advanced to play No. 2 seed Ohio State on Sunday. Tom Knight led the Fighting Irish with 14 points.

(2) Ohio State 95, (15) Iona 70

Deshaun Thomas scored 24 points, and second-seeded Ohio State dominated Iona, 95-70, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament’s West Region on Friday evening in Dayton, Ohio. Sam Thompson added 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Buckeyes, who advanced to play Iowa State on Sunday. Tavon Sledge led Iona with 20 points.

(12) Ole Miss 57, (5) Wisconsin 46

In a back-and-forth affair, Ole Miss kept #12 seeds perfect so far by pulling away in the second half of a close game. Brash Rebels’ star Marshall Henderson was only one for 11 in the first half, but he put it behind him after intermission and knocked down some key 3-pointers en route to finishing with a total of 19 points. The Rebels closed out the contest on a 25-10 run and won their first tournament game since 2001. Wisconsin was bitten by the cold shooting bug that seems to have plagued several teams in the tournament so far. The Badgers, who are not are not an offensive juggernaut to begin with, only shot 25% from the field. Sam Dekker, coming off the bench, was the lone Badger in double figures with 10 points.

(13) LaSalle 63, (4) Kansas State 61

LaSalle, which won a First Four game to make the field of 64, embraced its Cinderella status by builing an 18-point halftime lead and then holding on when Kansas State mounted a comeback and grabbed the lead. The Wildcats, however, scored only one field goal in the game’s final five minutes, while the Explorers’ Jerrell Wright went five of six from the free throw line down the stretch to pull off the upset. Wright was the catalyst for LaSalle, scoring 21 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Jordan Henriquez keyed the Wildcats comeback bid with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Wildcats star Rodney McGruder struggled, shooting five of 17 from the field. K-State had a chance to tie or win at the end of the game, but Angel Rodriguez’s off-balance shot was off the mark.
