Lee Ann Womack song ” I hope You Dance” was nominated for a Grammy for song of the year on this day in 2001. She was born in Jacksonville, Texas and later studied music at South Plain Junior College in Levelland.

She learned about country music from her dad who was a disc jocky, and he let her pick the music he would play on the radio, songs from Bob Wills, Ray Price and Glen Campbell.

In 1990 she moved to Nashville and sang demos and concentrated on her songwriting. That led to a record deal with Decca Records.

Womack’s first songs were more traditional sounding than what was on the radio and the time. But she had the backing for country giants like Alan Jackson and George Strait. In fact she has been featured on songs with Strait and has appeared on his concerts tours several times.

Two of my favorite songs by her, well, one we mentioned earlier, “I Hope You Dance”. It when to Number One and was named CMA’s song and single of the year in 2001.

The other is her first hit song that went to Number Two on the charts called “The Fool”, a great cheatin song.
