Since 2009 Lubbock Parks and Recreation Department has done the Pumpkin Trail. A ton (in the past they've seen hundreds) of jack-o-lanterns in different shapes, sizes and designs line a trail for free public viewing. According to this site, 882 have been collected so far this year, and they're hoping to get 2,000! Individuals, businesses and organizations design the pumpkins and it's a real treat for the whole family to view hundreds of festive, and sometimes scary pumpkins. All day Wednesday, 7:30 a.m.- 8 p.m., you can drop off your carved and decorated pumpkins at the Lubbock Arboretum at 42nd and University.

Got to wondering how carving pumpkins got their start and did a little research. The History Channel site says it's based on an old Irish tale dealing with a guy named "Stingy Jack" making a deal with the Devil, some coal and a carved-out turnip. Ta-da! The jack-o-lantern! Check out more on that website. Sounds good to me. If you or your group want to donate in this year's Pumpkin Trail, call 806-775-2685 or email nneill@mylubbock.us. Several sponsors make the event possible. Pumpkins will be displayed Thursday through Sunday, Oct 20-23.
