'Secular Society' is becoming a phrase more and more repeated everyday. With it's growing popularity, businesses are starting to cater towards this ideal, but it is not being received without scrutiny for one company in particular who wanted to take a new lead.

The Damson Dene Hotel in England's beautiful Lyth Valley prides themselves on their pristine environment, friendly, courteous staff, and the chance to have "a peaceful break away from it all''.

Some lodgers, though, were a bit surprised to find that their regular bed side bible had been replaced with the racy, best-seller, 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

If you've never heard of this novel, it is the first in the 'Fifty Shades of Grey' trilogy written by author E.L. James. It's classification doesn't quite fit the normal romance novel category due to the extremely scandalous scenes that include bondage and sadomasochism, among other things.

It is now easy to see why traveler's, looking for the comfort of the usually-present bedside bible, have become confused and offended by it's replacement at this hotel.

Damson Dene Hotel owner Jonathan Denby told NBC News that, ''...because everybody is reading ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ we thought it would be a hospitable thing to do, to have this available for our guests, especially if some of them were a little bit shy about buying it because of its reputation."

He purchased the Hotel from a Methodist group 10 years ago and admits that he had been pondering what to do with the Gideon's Bibles. He wanted to remove them because he felt that in this modern, secular society it is "wholly inappropriate" to have them in his lodger's personal bedrooms.

How well do you think this debate would have gone over had it occurred in the United States, instead?

Is there a middle ground etiquette for businesses to stand on when it comes to deciding between conservative, christian beliefs and the 'modern, secular society'?
