Glen Campbell Still On The Line On Rick’s Retro Rack [VIDEO]

On the “retro rack” is a singer who was not only major star, who crossed over from country music top pop music, but also had his own television show and appeared in a John Wayne movie.

 

Glen Campbell was born into a family of 12 children in 1936 in Delight, Arkansas. At one time back in the 1950′s he worked in Los Angeles as a session musician and worked with people like Ricky Nelson, Frank Sinatra and Merle Haggard to name a few. Campbell also was a member of the Beach Boys for a short time.

Moving on into the 60′s, Campbell had been on Capitol Records and in 1967 he recorded a song called “Gentle on My Mind”. It won a Grammy, and Campbell was named male vocalist of the year and entertainer of the year at CMA’s in 1968.

Campbell also was in the original version of the movie “True Grit” with John Wayne. He also had his own t.v. variety show called “The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour, which ran from 1968 to 1972.

After being a lull in hit songs, he came strong in 1975 with song “Rhinestone Cowboy” from the movie “Urban Cowboy”. It went to Number One.

But on this day in 1968, Campbell was riding the top of the charts with his Number One song “Wichita Lineman”.
