Curious Origins of Quotes from Politics, Entertainment and Sports [VIDEO]

National Archives
One of my favorite cartoons is Fred Basset, created by Alexander S. Graham. In 1953 Graham wrote one of the world’s most lasting lines about aliens, “Take me to your leader”. That famous quote led to research on other quotes and learned a few interesting facts.

Such as the quote we always attribute to Pres. Harry Truman, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”, was actually said by one of his colleagues, Eugene Purcell. Truman liked it so much he made a habit of using it.

There are funny quotes such as author/writer/entertainer Dave Barry said, “If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving an infant’s life, she will choose to save the infant’s life without even considering if there’s a man on base.”

I’ve got some favorite movie quotes which I found out are listed in this site’s top 10. “Bond, James Bond” originated in some writer’s room for the 1962 movie, “Dr. No”. And of course all you “Casa Blanca” fans know this one. “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.” Do you really think Bogie thought that one up? Doubt it.

One of my favorite quotes is the title of a song for which John Lennon and Paul McCartney both get credit. “All You Need Is Love” was written by John Lennon following a request to write a song that all languages could understand. The title makes the perfect quote for life.

Most of the time the credit doesn’t go to the originating author. Pres. John F. Kennedy of course is known for his “ask not what your country can do for you” quote from his inaugural address, which his brilliant speechwriter Ted Sorenson crafted and will forever be attributed by the public to the man who put a voice with it, JFK. Here’s a video of that quote which has become such a strong part of our spoken history.
