One of the annual events that take place at Texas Tech University is the Arbor Day celebration and this year is no different. It's planned for Friday at Memorial Circle on campus starting at 11 a.m. with free food, live music and of course in the early afternoon, the tree-planting in honor of Arbor Day.

Arbor Day was started by a pioneer journalist in Nebraska, J. Sterling Morton, who was able to sway that state's legislature to proclaim Arbor Day as a legal holiday in April 1872. the Arbor Day site has a starting statistic. It's estimated that a million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day!

Morton must have been a pretty persuasive guy. The idea took off in other states as well. Arbor Day is celebrated nationwide on the last Friday in April. Contact Meredith Gooch, Assistant Director Student Union and Activities, 806-742-4708, for more information on Tech's celebration.
